The medium of instruction at Yeditepe University is English; therefore, the English Preparatory Program plays a critical role in helping students develop both their general and academic English skills before they begin their departmental studies. Designed in line with a continuous improvement approach, our intensive language education program closely follows contemporary technologies and pedagogical innovations and integrates them into instructional practice.
The program aims to ensure that undergraduate students achieve the required level of English proficiency before starting their studies in their faculties. It is also designed to enable them to use English effectively in academic and social settings and to help them adapt to global learning environments by enhancing their intercultural awareness.
The English Preparatory Program is structured in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is offered at three levels: A, B1, and B2. Through ‘Main Course,’ ‘Reading & Writing,’ and ‘Speaking’ classes, students develop core language skills using a holistic approach. By the end of the program, students are expected to achieve B2 proficiency as defined by the CEFR.
At the B2 level, English for Specific Purposes (ESP) content is offered to help students prepare for the academic and professional language requirements of their departments.

The English Preparatory Program consists of three academic semesters: fall, spring, and summer. However, the preparatory programs for the English Language Teaching, English Language and Literature, and Translation and Interpreting Studies consist only of the fall and spring semesters; a summer term may be offered for these programs.
Instruction in the English Preparatory Program is delivered in the three levels outlined below:
A Level (CEFR A1–A2 Levels):
Students who successfully complete Group A proceed to the next group, B1. Those who are unsuccessful repeat the same group.
B1 Level:
Students who successfully complete the B1 group proceed to the next group, B2. Those who are unsuccessful repeat the same group.
B2 Level:
Students who successfully complete the B2 group begin their assigned undergraduate program. Those who are unsuccessful repeat the same group.
Each level lasts one (1) semester. Students who start at level A and successfully progress to the next level at the end of each semester may take the B2 level during the optional Summer School.
Attendance is compulsory in the Preparatory Program.
Students have the right to attend the Preparatory Program for up to two years. Students who do not pass the Preparatory Program at the end of the two-year period may freeze their registration for one year if they wish.
Students who do not freeze their registration at the end of the two-year period, or who freeze it for one year but still fail to complete the program, will have their enrollment withdrawn. Students whose enrollment is withdrawn due to failure in the Preparatory Program (except for those studying in the English Language Teaching program of the Faculty of Education, the Translation and Interpreting Studies, English Language and Literature, and the Turkish Language and Literature programs of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences) have the right to be placed by ÖSYM, in accordance with the rules set by the Higher Education Executive Board, in undergraduate programs taught in Turkish that have the same name as the program they were originally admitted to, based on the score they received in the university entrance exam. Students who wish to use this right must apply to ÖSYM centers.
English Proficiency Exam
Students who cannot provide evidence of sufficient English proficiency through documents* accepted by the University are required to take the English Proficiency Exam administered by the English Preparatory Program.

Program Profile
The Field-Specific English Preparatory Program is an intensive language education designed to ensure that students beginning their studies in Translation and Interpreting Studies, English Language and Literature, and English Language Teaching make a strong academic, intellectual, and cultural start.

English Placement Exam
No English Placement Exam is administered for students in the Departments of Translation and Interpreting Studies, English Language and Literature, and English Language Teaching.
These students are placed into program levels based on their scores in the English Proficiency Exam administered by the relevant preparatory program.
The Graduate English Preparatory Program at Yeditepe University is designed to support the academic success of candidates who wish to pursue graduate education in English and to improve their English proficiency. The main aim of the program is to develop the four core skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing – required in an academic environment for candidates who have not yet reached the B2 level, enabling them to follow graduate courses effectively.
Students who successfully complete the program will reach a level of English that will enable them to actively participate in graduate courses, confidently conduct their academic studies, and take an effective role in research processes.
Program Content:
The program focuses on developing the four core language skills through an integrated approach in an English context:
Learning Outcomes:
Students who complete the program:
Achieve a level of English proficiency that enables them to follow graduate courses independently and effectively,
Analyse academic literature and take an active role in research processes,
Develop the ability to write scientific reports and academic papers,
Become competent in giving presentations and participating in academic discussions,
Develop the linguistic accuracy, coherence, and terminological awareness required for academic communication,
Proficiency and Placement Exam:
At the beginning of each academic term, the English Proficiency and Placement Exam is held on the date, time, and location announced by the Institute. Newly enrolled students as well as those currently studying in the preparatory program may take this exam.
Candidates who receive a score equal to or above the threshold determined by the Institute and the programs become eligible to begin their registered graduate program directly. Candidates who score below the threshold are subject to preparatory education at the level determined according to their exam scores.
Levels and Program Duration
The program is structured in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is offered at three levels: A, B1, and B2. Each level corresponds to one semester of instruction, and completion of the B2 level is required in order to continue in the enrolled graduate program.
Students must attend at least 80% of the classes.
The duration of the program varies depending on the student’s English proficiency and needs; however, it is generally structured as one academic year (including the Fall and Spring semesters as well as the Summer School). This period may be extended, upon the student’s request and with the approval of the Institute’s Executive Board, for a maximum of one additional academic semester.
* The Senate may decide that, for admission to graduate schools, completion of a level other than B2 at the English Preparatory School may be considered sufficient, and students may proceed to their graduate programs after successfully completing the level determined as acceptable.
